COVID by the numbers – Wednesday – 4 new Hawkesbury cases – aged care visits if fully vaxxed Oct 11
Welcome to Wednesday evening and the latest in-depth Hawkesbury numbers and COVID local news – the numbers are up to 8pm on Tuesday night.
This is the most up-to-date round-up of Hawkesbury COVID numbers you can get, compiled by numbers guru Kevin Pollard using NSW Health datasets.
Our thanks, as always, to Kevin for putting the numbers together in this easily accessible format.
Coupled with our regular news updates when we hear about new COVID venues, this builds into a useful daily source of information for Hawkesbury residents.
Today’s headlines:
* There are 4 new COVID cases today in the Hawkesbury – all linked
* There are 87 active COVID cases in the Hawkesbury (was 98 yesterday)
* Of the 863 new NSW cases (was 863 yesterday) reported to 8pm, Tuesday, September 28 – 34 (was 53 yesterday) are from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, which includes the Hawkesbury.
* The 34 new cases in Nepean Blue Mountains LHD reported today is the lowest since 26 new cases were reported on August 17 – 43 days ago.
* There were 120,281 COVID-19 tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous day’s total of 132,279.
* NSW Health staff have been told to get vaccinated or be placed on unpaid leave if they do not meet this Thursday’s mandatory vaccination deadline of one vaccine shot. By the end of today, NSW expects 97.5% of NSW Health’s 140,000 staff will have received at least one dose.
* NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirms today visits to aged care will be allowed – but only if fully vaxxed – from October 11 onwards.
* The Premier says NSW is carefully considering whether schools can go back earlier than October 25.
* Smokers are up to 6 times more likely to die from COVID than non-smokers, according to new research led by Oxford University. Smokers are 80% more likely to be admitted to hospital with the virus than non-smokers, says the research.
* New Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows suicide, drug overdoses and car crash death rates decreased in 2020. COVID was the 38th leading cause of death (898 deaths). In 2020, there was a decrease in mortality in Australia overall with the five leading causes of death decreasing, with a significant reduction in respiratory diseases. Alcohol-induced death rates increased by 8.3% in 2020.
* International travellers could be able to return home to Australia without 7-day home quarantine in the future under a “test and release” COVID protocol being used overseas.
* NSW – 63.3% fully vaccinated and 87.1% first dose
* 48.1% of 12-15 year olds have had one dose.
* The first vaccine administered in NSW for 12-15 year olds was on September 13, so to get to 48% one dose in the first 17 days is impressive.
