Scammers targeting Hawkesbury residents – Police say be extra careful during lockdown

Jun 29, 2021

With the Hawkesbury locked down for two weeks, more people are getting online to pass the time and it’s leading to scammers targeting locals, with some residents losing funds from their bank accounts.

A Police spokesman said, “over the weekend, Hawkesbury Police Area Command received a number of reports where people have enabled unknown persons to access their devices remotely, giving easy access to bank accounts and the transfer of money.”

In another sting hitting a Hawkesbury resident, a rare vehicle part was advertised for sale on Gumtree. The buyer asked for pictures, which were supplied. Believing the items were legitimate and genuine, the victim transferred an amount of money, only to find out the item never existed.

“During lockdown and with more people being online, it is a timely reminder to be aware of online scammers using various platforms to obtain your personal details,” said the spokesperson.

“Be mindful, it is easy for these scammers to operate behind the veil of electronic devices.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!”
