Exploring the Avian Wonders of Hawkesbury: Join Eric the Birdman

Sep 26, 2023

In the lead-up to National Bird Week, Hawkesbury City Council (HCC) is spreading its wings to offer both Bushcare volunteers and other members of the community the opportunity to embark on a guided morning expedition with Eric the Birdman. The walk will take place on Thursday, 28th September, starting at 9 am at McMahon Park in Kurrajong.

Under the guidance of the renowned Eric the Birdman, participants will not only enjoy the great outdoors but also acquire essential skills in bird identification and mobile bird app usage. The best part? No prior experience in bushcare or bird watching is required, making this event accessible to bird enthusiasts of all levels.

“McMahon Park along Little Wheeny Creek offers a plethora of plant and bird diversity and it is home to many birds which are seen in our local gardens. Such a variety of habitats in a small area means we are likely to see a wide variety of bird species on this early morning walk,” HCC said in a statement.

Following the bird watching session, participants will have the chance to engage in an introductory bushcare experience, contributing to the restoration of the native bird habitat at McMahon Park.

The bird tour coincides with National Bird Week, which runs from 16th to 22nd October 2023. This year, BirdLife Australia is inviting people to participate in the Aussie Bird Count, a citizen science project celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Every year, Australians of all ages step into their front yards, backyards, courtyards, parks, and play areas to count the birds they spot within a 20-minute timeframe. This collective effort provides a snapshot of Australia’s most common bird species.

The data collected during this annual event allows researchers to track trends in bird communities, making birds an invaluable indicator of nature’s health and wellbeing.

Limited spots available for this free guided tour with Eric The Birdman and early registration is a must. Secure your spot at: www.eventbrite.com.au/e/hawkesbury-bushcare-bird-tours-with-eric-the-birdman-tickets-721853983697
