Freemans Reach Breakaway Reserve may be renamed

Nov 21, 2020

It’s been known as The Breakaway for a very long time, but now Hawkesbury Council is asking the public for their views about potentially renaming the Freemans Reach reserve, as well as having new names for the two Ovals.

The Breakaway – always popular with aspiring cricketers

The reserve – at 204 Freemans Reach Road – is a favourite with cricket teams across the summer months and is a much-loved local spot. It’s been known as The Breakway for decades.

The council are looking for a potential new name – or The Breakway could be the new official name if enough people vote for it – plus names for the two currently unnamed Ovals in the reserve. They are suggesting The Charlie Greentree Oval, and The George Greentree Oval, named after well-known locals.

Locals who’ve taken to Facebook have various views about the new names, with some saying it was time for these local legends to be recognised, while one commentator said he thought an aboriginal name should be considered.

Others said there was nothing wrong with The Reserve.
