FRI COVID UPDATE – 291 NEW NSW CASES HIGHEST YET – AT LEAST 50 INFECTIOUS IN COMMUNITY – 50 IN ICU

Aug 6, 2021

Today sees the highest number of new COVID cases recorded in a 24 hour period so far in NSW, and at least 50 of those people have been infectious while in the community, reported Premier Gladys Berejiklian this morning from 11am.

There are now 50 people in intensive care units with 22 of those on ventilators.

The Hawkesbury is steady at 6 cases. Yesterday NSW Health took that number down one but we checked why and it seems it may have been a person changing their address to another local government area. Either way, we’ve confirmed we still have 6 cases, and the source of each is known.

The Premier said that given the high number of NSW cases today, it’s likely we’ll see this upward trend continue. She warned we should be prepared for higher case numbers over the next few days.

On Wednesday, some 84,000 NSW residents got vaccinated and the Premier stressed she wanted to see that number increase.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Kerry Chant said there are 304 people in hospital, 50 in ICU, and 22 on ventilators.

A woman in her 60s died at Liverpool hospital overnight due to COVID.

There are two new cases in the Newcastle area, one a woman in her 20s, bringing the total to 7 in the Hunter region.
