Girls, get along to Hawkesbury Jets free session this Friday for some fun, slam dunks & alley oops

If you’re a girl aged between 6 to 15 interested in basketball, it’ll be a slam dunk this Friday if you get along to Hawkesbury Jets – they’re holding a free come-and-try session.

The Jets offer all levels of play and they’re renowned for their teaching programs, so whether it’s just for fun, or even to look at a budding career in basketball, it’s well worth a visit.

This Friday January 21 they are hosting a free IAAG come-and-try basketball event for girls, aimed at new or returning basket ballers who want to learn some new skills, and also have a fun morning making new friends. Ages 6-15 years.

“Hawkesbury Jets are committed to developing girls with a special weekly program to encourage beginners and give confidence to existing players run by some of our rep coaches,” says Stacy O’Toole, secretary of HDBA and who is also an IAAG Scholarship recipient.

The Jets have some great experience on the coaching side thanks to well known forward Tom Garlepp who has played for several NBL teams, most recently for Sydney Kings. He’s also represented Australia. Tom was Sydney Uni Flames WNBL Assistant Coach for the 2019/20 WNBL season, and the Under-20s womens’ NSW Blue team head coach for the last three years, as well as local comp head coach for Waratah1 Women.

With wife, Renae, both have been successful applicants of the Emerging Coaches Initiative run by Basketball Australia.

Tom ran a clinic at Hawkesbury for boys and girls from Hawkesbury’s 2022 representative teams for under 14s and under 16s players last Thursday, involving shooting and decision making, assisted by Hawkesbury Jets’ women’s coach Cleo Pickard (another IAAG Scholarship recipient).

“We are really keen to involve Tom Garlepp in this program as his interest and expertise in coaching is very much with women’s basketball,” said Ms O’Toole.

“We are keen to have Tom return to run a clinic for the girls’ program in the next school holidays.”

The Jets have been working hard on their girls/womens basketball program to encourage girls – and women – to join basketball at all levels, including representative.

Several members of Hawkesbury Jets have been nominated for scholarships with Basketball NSW’s I Am A Girl I Can Do Anything (IAAG) program including female players, referees, a coach and an administrator.

The I AM A GIRL Program is supported by the NSW Government‘s Strategic Focus on women and girls in sport through the #HerSportHerWay program and is a part of the overall NSW Legacy Program Pillars with a number of activations being rolled out each year leading up to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 with the Office of Sport.
