Hawkesbury Valley U10s star at Glenwood Derby
It was a match between mates on the weekend when Hawkesbury Valley Rugby took on Norwest Bulls Rugby. Both teams have a history of playing together in representative rugby at Western Sydney Two Blues. The game was highly competitive, with both teams eager to win bragging rights.
Norwest scored first with some slick ball movement, but Hawkesbury quickly responded with a powerful run by Dre Waters, who also converted the try. Norwest made some strategic changes and one of their bench players crossed the line, putting them in the lead at 10-7. However, Hawkesbury’s backs took advantage of a penalty and sent the ball to Alec Tuifua, who evaded three defenders and scored, making it 12-10 for Hawkesbury. Just before halftime, Norwest scored 15m in from touch to take the lead at 15-12.
During a sombre halftime, the Hawkesbury team regrouped and agreed to improve their discipline and knuckle down. “It’s time to get to work,” captain Iowa Mackenzie told the troops.
And work they did. Determined in the second half, making tackle after tackle their scrums were strong, their tackles accurate and the Hawkesbury Valley forwards were brutal at the rucks. Their hard work paid off as they could sense the momentum shifting in their favor. They realized that it was now a battle of desire and determination rather than skill and flair.
Power forward Knox Gillies scored first in the second half with 8 minutes to go, putting Hawkesbury ahead 17-15. The team was ecstatic. Norwest kicked off aggressively, keeping Hawkesbury pinned in their own half. With regular time over, Hawkesbury had the option to kick the ball out and secure the win. However, fly half Dre Waters showed brilliance as he broke the line and produced a remarkable flick pass to Connor Davison, who ran 70 meters to score under the posts. This sealed the victory for Hawkesbury with a final score of 24-15. The team celebrated their win in the local derby with style.
