COVID by the numbers Tuesday – no new Hawkesbury cases – 226,000 Aussies haven’t had second jab

Nov 16, 2021

Welcome to Tuesday evening and our in-depth Hawkesbury numbers and COVID local news.

This round-up of Hawkesbury COVID numbers is compiled by numbers guru Kevin Pollard using NSW Health datasets, and is up to 8pm on Monday evening.

Our thanks to Kevin for putting the numbers together and compiling the well researched news snippets in this easily accessible format.

Coupled with our regular news updates when we hear about new COVID venues, this builds into a useful daily source of information for Hawkesbury residents.

Today’s headlines:

* Zero new COVID cases in the Hawkesbury reported in the last 24 hours.

* There are 6 active COVID cases in the Hawkesbury (was 8 two days ago).

* There are 61 active COVID cases (was 73 two days ago) in the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, which includes the Hawkesbury.

* There are 2864 active cases (was 2906 yesterday) in NSW.

* Just over half – 115 of today’s 212 cases – are in Sydney (54.2%).

* With the vaccine rate slowing in NSW, 226,000 Australians haven’t come forward for their second jab in the 6 to 12 week timeframe recommended after their first dose.

* Over 10,000 Australians have filed COVID vaccine injury claims. Services Australia will launch an online portal next month, for uncapped claims above $5000 from those who suffered rare but significant coronavirus vaccine injuries and loss of income due to their COVID vaccine, with compensation for medical costs and lost wages to be paid by the Federal Government, via taxpayers. The TGA has recorded over 80,000 adverse events linked to COVID vaccination in Australia.

* There are 9 new COVID cases in Katherine in the NT. They are all Indigenous people, ranging in age from 71 to a 16-year-old girl and 5-year-old twin girls. One woman in her 60s has been taken to Royal Darwin Hospital. Yesterday, NT recorded 2 new cases in Indigenous people in Katherine, sending the Katherine Greater Area and Robinson River into a 3 day lockdown which has been extended to November 22.

* Mask mandate returns for NT residents until this Monday amid fears the virus may have been seeded from Darwin to other areas. NT had recorded 26 local cases in the 22 month pandemic until three days ago and has now recorded 11 new cases in the last two days.

* New Zealand reports 222 new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase on record for them.

* 41% of all the recorded 8866 COVID cases in NZ during the pandemic are people of Māori descent, Pacific Islanders 30% and people of Asian descent 6%. European/other is 21%. Pacific Islanders make up 40% of all cases that have been hospitalised, people of Māori descent 30%, Europeans/other 22% and people of Asian descent 5%.

* The NSW Perrottet government has approved plans to extend the state’s extraordinary COVID emergency powers until March 2023. Brad Hazzard and other ministers want it extended until October 2023.

* UK’s definition of a fully-vaccinated person will change to account for booster shots, your third shot. UK PM Boris Johnson: “If we want to avoid new restrictions on our daily lives, we must all get vaccinated as soon as we are eligible”.

* Police had to be called to Cranebrook High School this morning after a protest involving around 30 people against COVID vaccinations turned ugly. The school has offered COVID vaccines to students, leading to a confrontation with those opposed to the move. One parent was arrested by police when he became aggressive.

*The school made it very clear that it was a choice – parents could choose to vaccinate their kids or not, it wasn’t forced or mandatory.

There have been at least 359 temporary school closures (not all schools report) due to COVID in NSW since the beginning of Term 4 on October 5 (today is the 31st school day).
