Just when you thought it was safe…BOM says rain on the way next few days, possible flash flooding

The Bureau of Meteorology has today urged residents in flood-prone areas including the Hawkesbury to remain vigilant this week, with as much as 100mm of rain forecast for the greater Sydney region over the next four days from Wednesday, and up to 150mm over the next seven days.

BOM say an estimated 100mm is set to fall over parts of the NSW coast, including Sydney, from late Wednesday in a weather event that could lead to flash flooding in some areas.

That rain is likely to also affect parts of the Hawkesbury – our region’s forecast for this week shows 100% rain on Wednesday and raining on and off all the following week.

More than 150mm of rain is predicted over the seven days until next Wednesday, stretching from the Illawarra to around Queensland’s Moreton Island, says BOM, who add that the La Nina weather system will be around for at least another month.

The new weather system is forming as a result of a cold front sitting over the Nullarbor Plain in South Australia today – Tuesday – which will eventually make its way to the greater Sydney region late Wednesday.

It’s also worth noting that today – Tuesday – Warragamba Dam sits at 100% full.
