Top local team get to grips with Richmond Post Office heritage restoration

Nov 29, 2020

Richmond’s iconic 1875 Post Office building is set for a top to toe heritage restoration with local builders and heritage specialists coming on board to provide a highly qualified team of experts.

Well-known Kurrajong Hills local Jeff Wouters of Norton Homes & Developments is taking a senior role during the planning and design phases and he’ll oversee all construction work on site.

“I have been a fan for many years, having watched him build quality homes for several past clients,” said Matthew Bennett whose BCM property group bought the Post Office in Windsor St next to Richmond park.

“His restoration of the 1830s Rutherglen on March St in Richmond was a fantastic job and it was the key reason we asked him to come lead our team,” said Mr Bennett.

“It is a privilege to be invited to oversee the restoration of Richmond’s most iconic building”, said Mr Wouters. “Matthew keeps reinforcing the responsibility we all have to future Hawkesbury generations. It is a legacy project for all of us.

Mr Wouters has already teamed up with Altura Spatial owner Greg Monaghan – another Hawkesbury local – to 3D scan the entire building, which will then allow heritage architect Barbara Tarnawski to fully document the restoration process.

Ms Tarnawski runs Kurrajong firm BT Architects and has worked on several significant local projects, including redesigning the top-class Spicers Sangoma Retreat at Bowen Mountain. She will work on the heritage requirements for the Post Office and form a Conservation Management Plan.

Also on board the project is electrician Steven Masters, another Kurrajong-based team member who runs S.A. Masters Electrical Services. He’s been awarded the electrical contract covering lighting, power and electrical safety.

You can meet the RPO Restoration Team on December 5 from 9am – 11am when the building is open to visitors, so you can get a peek inside this landmark building before restoration work begins.
