COVID by the numbers – Thursday – 1 new Hawkesbury case – Coles, Woolies, Aldi staff must be vaxxed

Oct 21, 2021

Welcome to Thursday evening and the latest in-depth Hawkesbury numbers and COVID local news – the numbers are up to 8pm on Wednesday night.

This is the most up-to-date round-up of Hawkesbury COVID numbers you can get, compiled by numbers guru Kevin Pollard using NSW Health datasets.

Our thanks, as always, to Kevin for putting the numbers together in this easily accessible format.

Coupled with our regular news updates when we hear about new COVID venues, this builds into a useful daily source of information for Hawkesbury residents.

Today’s headlines:

* 1 new COVID case reported in the last 24 hours in the Hawkesbury – linked to other cases.

* There are 25 active COVID cases in the Hawkesbury (was 25 yesterday).

* Of the 372 new NSW cases (was 283 yesterday) reported to 8pm, Wednesday, October 20 – 10 are from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, which includes the Hawkesbury.

* There are 246 active COVID cases (was 275 two days ago) in the Nepean Blue Mountains LHD.

* Yesterday NSW was reporting 5440 active cases. Today it is 5220, a drop of 220 cases after it jumped by 1282 cases yesterday morning.

Confused yesterday, and even more so today? It’s not surprising. Let’s try to explain…

NSW Health explained late yesterday afternoon after Kevin’s post: “Cases remain active for 14 days from date of onset, but as of today those in hospital are now counted as active for 28 days from date of onset. The aim is to capture those cases who may remain in hospital with a longer Covid-19 infection.”

* In the Nepean Blue Mountains LHD, there were 13 cases yesterday, 27, 10, 6, 4, 20, 24, 20, 15, 23, 20, 41, 35, 20, 33, 28, 15, 42 on previous days.

There were 86,235 COVID tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous days: 88,664, 90,597, 60,273, 69,107, 66,311, 85,000 and 85,133 tests.

* 0.43% of today’s tests in NSW came back positive. It’s the 10th day in a row in NSW where the positive rate was a low 0.40% to 0.48%. The highest was 1.21% positive on September 7 (1222 cases from 100,745 tests).

* Woolworths has announced they will mandate COVID vaccines for workers in all states and territories. All staff will need to be fully vaccinated by January 31, 2022 in NSW, VIC, ACT, WA and NT, and by March 31 in QLD, TAS & SA.

* Coles will mandate COVID vaccines in NSW, VIC, ACT, WA and NT but not in QLD, TAS or SA. All staff in NSW, VIC, ACT, WA and NT must be fully vaccinated by December 17.

* ALDI Australia have said they will also mandate the vaccine for their staff but won’t announce details and dates for a couple of weeks.

* Meanwhile, a whopping 82.4% of Canberrans aged 12 and over have now been fully vaccinated. 99% have had their first dose.

* Contrast that though with over 200 positive COVID cases in NSW jails. Only 35.6% of the prison population are fully vaccinated while 70% have had one dose.

* Parents of school-aged children (but not day-care-aged kids) in NSW will receive a $250 voucher from the government to spend in NSW between March and October 2022. The voucher can be spent on activities with their children, or by the parents alone.

* Premier Perrottet said today the voucher, which is one per household, was a thank-you to parents who kept NSW’s economy going while simultaneously caring for, or schooling their children at home.

* The US expects to begin vaccinations for its 5-to-11 age group in early November ahead of the FDA’s (US Food and Drug Administration) expected emergency use authorisation of the Pfizer vaccine for children in that age range.
