MON COVID UPDATE – HAWKESBURY CASES RISE TO 8 – 478 NEW NSW CASES – 8 DEATHS

Aug 16, 2021

It’s the largest increase in COVID cases for NSW in a 24 hour period at 478 new cases, and tragically there have been 8 deaths due to COVID in the last 24 hours.

The Hawkesbury has 8 known COVID cases, up from 5 yesterday. Of those, 7 are from an unknown source.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Kerry Chant said at this morning’s briefing, “too many people are infectious in the community and it is critical we all heed and take part – stay home and leave home for most minimum of time.”

Police commissioner Mike Fuller outlined the depth of extra policing across NSW – which will include around 1800 ADF personnel – under Operation Stay At Home.

“Nearly 18,000 police and what will build up to 1800 members of the Australian defence force will be enforcing the health orders, not just in the greater Sydney area but across the state of New South Wales,” said the Commissioner.

Over the next 21 days, the New South Wales community need to know we are out there enforcing these health orders to stop the spread of the virus so we can come out of lockdown. I don’t apologise for that. We all want the same thing but we need a circuit breaking from a law enforcement perspective and that started at midnight last night.

“You can expect to see high-visibility policing across the state. Yes, there will be a focus on those LGAs of concern and that is about trying to stop the spread of the virus, particularly those people who are positive Covid moving around.

“Can I say that from my perspective, overnight, we have seen nearly 500 infringements written for a range of health orders; 120 were people for not wearing masks and other were a mix of the health orders.”

The deaths were:

A man in his 80s from south west Sydney died at Campbelltown Hospital.

A man in his 40s from south west Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital.

A woman in her 70s from Sydney’s northern suburbs died at Royal North Shore Hospital.

A woman in her 80s from Sydney’s inner west died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She was a resident of the Wyoming Residential Aged Care Facility and is the third death linked to this cluster.

A man in his 70s from south west Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital. He was a patient in the geriatric ward at the hospital and is the eighth death linked to this outbreak.

A man in his 80s from south west Sydney died at Campbelltown Hospital.

A man in his 80s from western Sydney died at Nepean Hospital.

A 15-year-old boy from south west Sydney died at Sydney Children’s Hospital. He was receiving treatment for a serious medical condition and was a confirmed COVID case.
