Severe weather warning continues for our region – BOM says damaging winds likely today

May 31, 2022

Source: Bureau of Meteorology Issued at 8:20 am Tuesday, 31 May 2022 BOM’s latest weather alert covers the Hawkesbury, and other locations which may be affected by damaging winds includes Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Taree, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Armidale, Canberra and Goulburn.

There is a risk of damaging winds continuing on and east of the Great Dividing Range, says BOM in its latest weather update a short while ago.

It’s a large area, so we may or may not be hit hard, but wise to take precautions – see warning map.

Weather Situation – says BOM: A deep low pressure system over the southwest Tasman Sea will maintain a vigorous westerly flow over NSW on Tuesday. DAMAGING WINDS with peak gusts reaching up to 90 to 100km/h are likely on and east of the Great Dividing Range, with gusts to 110km/h possible about exposed higher ground. Strong winds averaging 60 to 70km/h are possible about higher ground and through the Hunter region. Winds are expected to ease in the north later today. Saturated soils bring an increased risk of gusty winds toppling trees and powerlines, particularly along elevated terrain.
