Chemists giving COVID vaccines in the Hawkesbury – but only Astra Zeneca

Aug 12, 2021

Here’s a list of pharmacies in the Hawkesbury who you can go to for Astra Zeneca COVID vaccines.

We called all the pharmacies on the list and each has stocks of Astra Zeneca, if you’re after that.

Best to call them first for an appointment – details for each below – because Terry White Chemists (TWC), for example, start on Monday August 16.

They join around 500 pharmacies offering COVID vaccines across Australia and it seems most of those are Astra Zeneca, not least because, two Hawkesbury chemists told us, the conditions for storing Pfizer appeared to be too ‘onerous’.

In fact, that is not the case, thanks to revised medical advice to the Federal government which we’ll put below, so Hawkesbury chemists should be able to stock Pfizer – if only they could get their hands on supplies…

For anyone interested, here’s the Governments’s Therapeutic Goods Administration’s advice on storing Pfizer.

“While longer term storage at dry ice or ultra-cold temperatures (-90C to -60°C) is still required, for unopened vials, storage and transportation at domestic freezer temperatures (-25°C to -15°C) is now permitted for up to 2 weeks. Vials stored or transported in this manner can also be returned to ultra-cold longer term storage within the original shelf life of the product.

“In addition, unopened vials can now be stored for up to 5 days at domestic refrigerator temperatures (2°C to 8°C). Within this 5 day period, up to 12 hours may be used for transportation, but the time used for transport of unopened vials at refrigerator temperatures counts against the 5 day limit for storage at 2°C to 8°C. Once thawed, it should not be re-frozen.”

TWC did tell us this morning they will be ready to vaccinate with Moderna – which is not available in Australia yet – and Pfizer when supply is available.
