Raw sewage leaks into Hawkesbury River following ‘break’ at Council’s South Creek pump station
Hawkesbury Council is reporting raw sewage flowing into the Hawkesbury River after what they call a ‘break’ at the South Creek pumping station.
Over the past few weeks hundreds of people have been swimming in the river during the holidays and so far there is no news on how long sewage has been leaking into the river, or how much.
A spokesperson for the Council says the break, “has caused sewage to seep into the Hawkesbury River”.
“Swimming and fishing is currently prohibited between South Creek at the Windsor Boat Ramp and Windsor Beach at Macquarie Park. Signage is being erected to advise river users.
“Council staff are working to fix the break and determine the extent of the contamination in the river,” said the spokesperson.
The NSW Environmental Protection Agency has been informed, and we’ve asked the Council how long sewage has been flowing into the river, and how they discovered the leak. We’ll come back with answers to those queries when we get them.
