Traffic lights on, extra lane open – new Windsor Bridge already delivering benefits says Preston

Dec 3, 2020

Hawkesbury MP Robyn Preston says work on the new Windsor Bridge has reached another milestone with new traffic lights at the George and Bridge Street intersection turned on and the bridge’s extra lane officially open to traffic.

This afternoon the new bridge traffic lights were not switched on – roadside signs say that will happen tomorrow Friday – but it’s happening soon.

People who cross the bridge every day will be hoping those new traffic lights and extra lane alleviate the traffic queues many are familiar with, not least those travelling from the direction of Wilberforce and Freemans Reach.

Ms Preston said the new Windsor Bridge was an essential local and regional road link across the Hawkesbury River and was already delivering benefits to the local community.

“Improved safety, new pedestrian and cyclists paths and improved flood resilience are just some of the many benefits this project has already brought to the area,” Ms Preston said.

“The new approaches to the bridge and improved intersections at either end have also opened to traffic as part of this work and when completed, the new Thompson Square will create a single green open space for the community.”

It’s forecast by Transport for NSW that as many as 25,000 vehicles will be using the bridge each day by 2056 – 36 years into the future.

“It is pleasing to see this important project reach another milestone, delivering benefits to road users and the local community now,” said Ms Preston.

The opening of the bridge’s extra lane is in addition to the two standard lanes that have already opened to traffic and the new traffic lights will replace the temporary roundabout at the Bridge and George Street intersection.

Motorists can still expect to see work crews onsite, with final work including landscaping in the lower part of Thompson Square, completing the viewing deck which is all that will remain of the original bridge, and some local roadwork under way, with this work set to be completed by mid-April.
