COVID by the numbers Monday – no new Hawkesbury cases – unvaccinated in Austria ordered to lockdown

Welcome to Monday evening and our in-depth Hawkesbury numbers and COVID local news.

This round-up of Hawkesbury COVID numbers is compiled by numbers guru Kevin Pollard using NSW Health datasets, and is up to 8pm on Sunday evening.

Coupled with our regular news updates when we hear about new COVID venues, this builds into a useful daily source of information for Hawkesbury residents.

Today’s headlines:

* Zero new COVID cases in the Hawkesbury in the last 24 hours.

* Of the 165 local cases (195, 250, 286 cases on previous days) reported to 8pm, Sunday, November 14 – seven are from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, which includes the Hawkesbury.

* In the Nepean Blue Mountains LHD, there were 6 cases yesterday, 6, 9, 1, 5, 4, 3, 3, 6, 3, 14, 15, 3, 8, 3 cases on previous days.

* There were 50,453 COVID-19 tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous days of 57,878, 58,915, 77,119, 77,009, 95,804, 66,680 tests.

* 0.33% of the 50,453 tests came back positive (165 cases). 50,453 tests in NSW is the lowest in 126 days (49,055 tests on July 13).

* 96 of today’s 165 cases were in Sydney (58.1%).

* There are 2906 active COVID cases (was 2901 yesterday) in NSW.

* From today, NSW Health will no longer provide a breakdown of locally acquired and overseas acquired COVID cases in its daily updates but will instead provide a total of all cases.

* Since the introduction of quarantine-free international travel for fully vaccinated travellers on 1 November, the origins of where each case was acquired can no longer be determined immediately and so it is not possible to accurately report overseas cases on a daily basis. This breakdown of locally and overseas acquired cases will now be reported.

* Generally, 0-2% of the total cases in NSW each day are from overseas return travellers but this could increase once more flights land in Australia.

* Overseas, beginning last night in Austria, anyone unvaccinated over the age of 12 is not allowed to leave their home except for “essential” reasons such as grocery shopping. Police are checking peoples’ papers on the streets. There is no longer an option to present a negative COVID test. It’s vaccination or lockdown.

* 64.3% of Austria’s population (aged 0 and over) is fully vaccinated, making it the lowest rate in Western Europe.

* Meanwhile, Israel says children aged 5 to 11 will be eligible for vaccination and that a starting date for the inoculation campaign will be announced within days. The decision followed approval by an Israeli expert panel on vaccinations last week after the US FDA granted emergency use of Pfizer.

* Canada’s review of Pfizer COVID vaccine for children between the ages of five to 11 should be completed within the next “one to two weeks”.

* 53,780 Australians aged 0-19 have contracted COVID since January 2020 or 28.2% of all the 190,603 COVID cases in the country over the last 22 months.

* Approximately 31,000 (16.3% of 190,603 cases) of those 53,780 are under the age of 12 – an age group who don’t yet have access to a vaccine. On current stats, that could mean 7500 of those 53,780 children will go on to develop or currently have Long COVID.

AstraZeneca is moving to modest profits from the COVID vaccine it developed with the University of Oxford after watching Pfizer and Moderna reap huge returns over the past year of the pandemic. The move is in line with the company’s plan early in the crisis, when it pledged not to profit from the vaccine as long as the disease remained a pandemic. It’s now moved to an endemic, (means the normal circulation of a virus in a specified location), and it means AZ will up prices slightly.

* WA Premier Mark McGowan defends WA’s hard border and blasts the Federal Government and NSW over their handling of COVID. McGowan: “I’ve never met Greg Hunt, I’ve never spoken to Greg Hunt, I wouldn’t know him, if I met him, he’s got a very vivid imagination (Greg Hunt said WA will drop COVID border for Perth Ashes Test in January), he hasn’t spoken to the WA Health Minister. I urge the Commonwealth Government to stop making things up, they have been difficult over the last 2 years. NSW is always trying to be adventurous and unsafe. In WA we’ve been safe and cautious.”

* There have been at least 354 temporary school closures (not all schools report) due to COVID in NSW since the beginning of Term 4 on October 5 (today is the 30th school days). Primary schools have accounted for 72% of total closures.

* Victoria has recorded 860 new COVID cases plus 5 deaths after 905 cases yesterday. There have been 357 COVID deaths in Victoria over the last 40 days.

COVID deaths and hospital numbers – 1 death in the last 24 hours – none in the Hawkesbury

NSW Health is today reporting 1 death, a woman in her 80s died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

She was a resident of Presbyterian Aged Care nursing home at Ashfield in Sydney’s Inner West, where she acquired her infection. This is the first death linked to an outbreak at this facility.

She was fully vaccinated and had underlying health conditions.

There have been 558 COVID-related deaths in NSW since this Delta outbreak started on June 16.

At least 42 of the 558 have died at home, and of those 24 didn’t know they had COVID at the time of death.

At least 91 of the 558 COVID-related deaths in NSW since June 16 were people who were fully vaccinated.

The 91 deaths among people fully vaccinated were 4 people in their 50s, 5 people in their 60s, 28 people in their 70s, 30 people in their 80s, 23 people in their 90s and 1 person in their 100s.

The vast majority of people who were fully vaccinated and died of COVID had underlying health issues, over half had significant health issues, almost a quarter were in palliative care, many were elderly and in aged care facilities, some had disabilities.

6.27 million of NSW’s 8.2 million residents are fully vaccinated, 91 of those that were fully vaccinated have died of the virus.

There are 216 patients with COVID (was 224 yesterday) in hospital, with 32 (32 yesterday) in ICU, 15 (16 yesterday) of whom require ventilation.

There have been 72,548 locally acquired cases reported since June 16, when the first case in this outbreak was reported.

Vaccinated numbers – in NSW, by the end of today, November 15

16 years and over: 91.3% fully vaccinated and 94.22% first dose.

12-15 year olds: 73.9% fully vaccinated and 80.8% first dose.

16-19 year olds: 80.3% fully vaccinated and 90.7% first dose.

All 8.2 million NSW residents (aged 0 and over): 76.9% fully vaccinated and 80.0% first dose.

All 25.9 million Australian residents (aged 0 and over): 69.7% fully vaccinated and 76.2% first dose.

558 COVID deaths: 64.7% not vaccinated (361 people), 19.0% had received 1 dose (106 people), 16.3% were fully vaccinated (91 people).

1327 in ICU: 81.6% not vaccinated, 10.8% had received 1 dose, 7.6% were fully vaccinated

11,875 hospitalised: 76.5% not vaccinated, 13.1% had received 1 dose, 10.4% were fully vaccinated

72,558 cases: 72.9% not vaccinated, 14.3% had received 1 dose, 12.8% were fully vaccinated.
